Fractions Problem-Solving Research

Problem says, “The living room has the biggest table with 8 friends, so his parents put the remaining 5 loaves on that table.” The student solution shows 4 loaves split in half and the last loaf split into 8 pieces.

Understanding fractions is one of the most important gateway skills to being successful in higher-level math courses. That’s why Teachley recently partnered with HITN Learning, a division of the Hispanic Telecommunications and Information Network, to help kids, especially children in under-resourced communities, better connect with and engage more meaningfully with fractions. Our latest software allows students to draw models of fractions to help them think deeply and solve fractions word problems. In a recent study with 140 3rd-5th grade students, Teachley’s software helped improve fractions problem solving by 20% after just 3-5 math sessions.

Teachers all agreed or strongly agreed the Teachley software is easy to use and implement in the classroom, supports their school’s goals for enhancing math achievement, and improves student outcomes. One fifth grade teacher said, “My students tend to struggle with fractions, but with the assistance from Teachley, my students grasped a better understanding on how to solve problems involving fractions.” Teachley’s fractions problem solving software is now available for use on Chromebooks and other computers as part of the Fractions Boost Intervention.

Teachley’s problem-solving software was developed with generous philanthropic grant funding. Access our white paper here to learn more about the research supporting Teachley Fractions Problem Solving.
