Bringing Math to Life through Stories

Meet the MATH CORPS, a brave band of superheroes who use math powers to trick Professor Possum and save their golden planet. The Math Corps thwart common misconceptions and help foster key math practices through engaging stories.

Elementary school teachers use posters, videos, comics, and eBooks featuring the Math Corps characters to help their students understand everything from the importance of justifying your thinking to being persistent and using different strategies.

Big News!

With a new grant from the US Department of Education, Teachley will partner with the Hispanic Telecommunications and Information Network (HITN) and Sirius Thinking to create more bilingual Math Corps videos, comics, and eBooks covering K-5 math domains, making the content accessible to Spanish-speaking students and their families.

Math Corps vs. the Serve-O-Matic

This episode features Lidah, who makes sense of problems and perseveres in solving them. She defeats Professor Possum's tennis robot using her knowledge of equivalent fractions.

By embedding the math within an engaging story and context, students are able to see strong math practices in action. With repeated watching, students internalize the math lessons.

Comic Books

Teachley offers a series of comic books featuring the Math Corps. Through a partnership with HITN, Teachley will publish even more English/Spanish bilingual books.

Open the book from one side to read it in English. Then flip it over to read the other side in Spanish.

Math Practice Standards

Each of the Math Corps characters embody one of the 8 Math Practices and explain the standard in a more child-friendly way.

For example, the standard “Reason abstractly and quantitatively” becomes a set of twins, Quanty and Qually, who help students understand the need to consider both the numbers and their meaning. Quanty focuses on numbers and equations, while Qually points out the importance of the context and meaning for those numbers.

In each story, Professor Possum makes the same mistakes children often make when learning math. For example, thinking that 1 ⁄ 8 must be bigger than 1 ⁄ 2 because 8 > 2. The Math Corps heroes outwit the professor and model how to avoid these common misconceptions.
